Self driving car for only $1,830 extra

I just saw the coolest thing on Slashdot. Apparently GM is going to be ready to introduce a self-driving car by 2008. It's interesting... I've always thought that the basics of navigating a decently straight stretch of road (like most of my drive to work) wouldn't be too difficult. They call this "advanced cruise control". It's sounds pretty cool, but how do you take this kind of system and go the rest of the way to have an entirely automated commute? I would think you'd need to have some kind of transmitters along the road to indicate the status of upcoming traffic signals and then there's even more complex situations like construction detours and navigating around accidents... and then there's pedestrians. Yeah, this "advanced cruise control" may hit the streets in a few years, but it'll be a long time before we're living like the people in The 6th Day.

I paid $3.00 a gallon this morning and that's going to be cheap for awhile. This is just NUTS! I can clearly remember paying $0.89 a gallon when I started driving. That wasn't that long ago. Times sure have changed.
